As you may have noticed, my blog finally has a name. Wiohpeyata means "westward" in Lakota (for pronunciation see here). Horace Greeley is credited with the phrase "Go west, young [wo]man, and grow up with the country." This quote resonated with me because I too headed west for my next great adventure. However, the Sioux YMCA works to clean up the after effects of the westward expansion Greeley so strongly advocated for. For the Lakota, the west symbolizes the end of life because it is where the sun sets and is assigned the color, black. The west is also where the Thunderbird lives, who sends the rain and thunder. The west is the source of water, and hence it is vital. For more on the Four Sacred Directions, click here.
