The following are real life quotes from my first day subbing at Dupree High School (today as the Jr High and High School Reading teacher)
(A, B, X,Y, & Z are all children, not me)
(A, B, X,Y, & Z are all children, not me)
- You look too young to be a teacher. How old are you anyways?
- You look like you're from Tennessee.
- You look like you're from Texas.
- Y: How long will you be here for? Z: Why, so you can hook up?
- A: How much do you make [at the Sioux YMCA]? B: Isn't it rude to ask someone how much they make?
- Rodeo is life.
- Do you know who George Strait is?
I got to glance at some short answer questions where the worksheet asked for the students to name their three most valuable objects [drawing parallels to a short story regarding a cherished book]. Below are actual answers:
- My star quilt (it's the only thing I have from my mom, I guess)
- My family, my TV, and my room (family is my everything, I can watch my TV, and my room is a place I can sleep)
- My knife, my bracelet, basketball (my knife protects me, without my bracelets my arms would be bare, ball is life)
- My iphone ( I can use it to call 911)
- My friend X, my brother Y, my cousin, Z and my girl friend A (X has been with me through the ups and downs..[I wish I could remember what they said about their cousin brother because it was good]...she's my baby girl
More wisdom from the South D [from me]: I never understood the existence of Family Dollar's until I lived in a town with one 20 min away and a Walmart 2 hours away.
I promise I will catch up on my August and September posts--there's some good stuff. It's just that I got 40 emails today from different college students asking for our volunteer program application. Business is booming and deadlines are looming!
