Cultural Differences
- Hissing at rez dogs. People here hiss at dogs to shoo them away. I've picked up the habit and sometimes find myself hissing at Courtney's dogs too. Kenton once hissed at me to get my attention.
- Treatment of pets in general here is different. Pets are left outside and people don't hesitate to kick or throw things at animals. The pets run free, but so do the kids.
- Adults don't yell at kids out here. To teach them a lesson, they shame their kids. Adults only yell when they're drunk and usually violence follows.
- You don't refuse food that's offered to you out here. It's extremely rude.
- Military personnel are revered.
- Indian children might not jump right into a game. They will watch before getting involved to learn the game so as not to make a fool of themselves.
- You must take things people say will a grain of salt because it is common for someone to exaggerate or fib.
- Many young Lakota girls are shy and modest.
- The mothers/grandmothers/aunties are the matriarchs. Carol posits this could be in part to the high incarceration rates of Lakota men.
- All the door knobs are installed upside down. Not sure if this is on purpose or a coincidence.
